baby dragon – 18 – game is finished!

yippiee!! i made it 🙂

after spending the weekend with more cleaning up, and actually also adding features to the game … lol … , i made this morning some final tweaks, and a last test run, and decided it is good to go for now…

the whole time was a big adventure for myself. it started from the idea to learn how to make a game character, so baby dragon was born, and when i had it, it evolved from there. i am happy, i did stick to the coding learning, as this was in the beginning so very frustrating, that i almost gave up. but, gladly, i stick with it, and now have quite some knowledge in c#, and looking forward to do a second game! with more streamlined code, and not so much “spaghetti-code” as i did in several places,,, since i did not know how it could be done better… the best experience in all the gamemaking was, when seeing how things work out, after long testing and struggling, baby dragon walked finally in unity, same nice as in blender 🙂 and with the gardentools, i can tell you, they almost drove me mad… lol… but, now all (or rather most of it) runs smoothly, and i hope it is a game for enjoying…

so, i like to share my game with my dear readers. the game is free for personal use. the game art and everything stays my copyright (with the exceptions mentioned in the credits of the game). it is ok to share the game further, exactely as you got it, mentioning where you got it from. it is not ok to sell my game 😉

so, if you don’t mind a big download, and don’t mind playing a game which has no save feature, like back in the eighties …lol, then feel free to download and try it. the gameplay takes about 2 hours, at least this is what my husband needed … the mac version runs stable on different macs, this is tested. i tried to make a pc version, and i hope i got it right. but as i said in the previous post, i cannot even check if the game starts on pc. so, i would appreciate some feedback here, in particular if it is not running at all, so that in such a desastrous case, i could cancel the pc download button and save others the long download time…

and now i hope you enjoy!! i would appreciate to hear how you liked it, or what you don’t liked, so that i can do better in the next game project 🙂 have fun now!

baby dragon – 17

big excitement!!! yesterday i built the first time my game, and gave it to my husband to play 🙂 so he is my betatester, so to say 🙂 … he did not knew anything about the game, which is perfect for testing. the first surprise for me was, that he plays the game completely different than i intended it… lol …. good news is, all the coding runs flawlessly. there are some issues with the gameplay however, that my husband pointed out and i realised from watching him play. so, now i will try to improve these things, and then it will be ready for a first release, after he tested it again :-). as we only have macs, and no friends with pc, i am doing a mac version…. and, since i know mac users are the minority, i am thinking of trying to get a pc version too. has some of you, my dear readers, experience if i could just built a pc version within my unity and that would run on a pc same as it runs on our macs? i could not even test if the pc built would start at all…

would you be interested in trying my game, even if it would be a heavy download? please, let me know in the comments. and if you are interested, please let me know also whether you would need a mac or pc version, so i could see if it makes sense to struggle to get a pc version too 🙂 thanks!

baby dragon – 14

i can imagine, my dear readers, that you start to think i gave up on my game project… it just looks like that from the non existing blog posts… but the contrary is the case 🙂 i am very busy, and making progress. i finally got a very difficult script to run *difficult for me as a bloody beginner, that is*… and, i got the idea that my game needs a second character. so, i jumped into blender, turned on dynatopo and had some fun roughing out the first design 🙂 this kind of sculpting still works much better in blender than in zbrush, dynatopo is so much superior with it really being dynamic…

baby_dragon_19

i kind of like how he looks right now, i think he will complement baby dragon well 🙂 please stay tuned, even if it takes me so long to make my game …

as a side note… i got worried that my game has too much graphics already, so i put a framecounter, and am glad it turns out my beasty machine gets 65 frames a second. so i assume it will run fine, once it it finished,,, at least if i not add too much more graphics, that is… lol… fun !!

baby dragon – 13

today one of my rare blog posts without image 😉 … but i feeled i like to report how things are going, and at the same time let you know that i am very busy at creating the game…

so two funny stories to illustrate how my “game making” progresses :

after many days of programming and testing, i finally noticed that baby dragon is sligthly hoovering over the ground, as the shadows reveal. …hmm… i checked the placement, yes correct height 0, meaning placed firmly on ground. but when i start the game, he floats a tad and is now on height 0.1, thus a tad above ground… hmmm, i thought this is my walking routine, the script i wrote for that. so i put in debug.logs, checked all the variables etc, and i could not find the spot where he got lifted. my script just did not do that. after several hours(!) of trying to figure out what is going on, i removed his walking script completely. so all he could do is standing like a statue… and, what did he do? when the game starts he begins floating into air! ..lol… so now i knew i had searched all these hours the error in the wrong place… then i thought well, i strip off all components of dragon until i find which is the culprit… and found it, it was the “navmesh agent”. without that dragon walked nicely on the ground, and i was happy, since i had already forgotten what the task of the navmesh agent is… but i soon learned it again: since dragon was now able to walk through walls 😦 … well, so i put back in the navmesh agent, and dragon floated again…. after a lot of research i found that i can adjust his height in the navmesh agent, its a public variable… problem solved, dragon walks now nicely on the ground, and not through the walls… took only about 4 hours… lol

the other story is even funnier 🙂 as you might have noticed, i do learn unity, as well as scripting in c# while i am doing this game. and c# seems to be a very picky language. it has no tolerance whatever to typos, or missing brackets, or missing ; or similar, in contrast to html which generously works with a html file that contains such “minor” errors. but c# wants to have the code with 100% correct syntax. not an easy thing. .. i needed a script that turns an item off, after 5 seconds, say. so i called this script “timerscript”. and, this is where the desaster began, but i did not knew it. since timerscript is a c# class, my script name completely confuses the c# editor. now even simple lines like “float warte = 5f;” threw an error. indeed, every word i wanted type threw an error. i tried to ignore it, and typed on, but of course this was no good. a script that is all over marked red, will not run, even if the code written is correct… yes, it took me also quite some time to find the error, namely the bad name for this script… this comes when you learn a new scripting language, and jump head of heels in, like i like to do… lol

nevertheless, i got quite some things done now. dragon can walk, pick up objects, put them down again, interact with some objects, ,,and when you know the solution it is already possible to play the game from start to finish… now, i need to make the game experience for the player more fun, and that it is possible for the player to find the solution 😉 …

what is amazing is, the more i do on the game, the more ideas i have what i want put in. actions that dragon could perform, things that could happen when the player does this or that… it is so much fun, only pity is i cannot share all this, without giving spoilers…
