male head sculpting

back to sculpting in zbrush 🙂 and back to exploring which way is best for me to sculpt… today, i used a dynamesh approach, that mimicks strongly how one would go about drawing the head, i had seen it in a video on youtube … the head is inspired by burne hogarth drawings… i put an image that shows various steps along the creation. i like it, as it gives good control…

anatomical study of the head – 2

wow, this was quite an eyeopener 🙂 i did understand some things i never was aware of, and despite this mesh still has just 40 000 polygons, i think one can see the difference it makes when doing the anatomy correct (or better at least … lol) … i am showing the basemesh too, as it supports my idea that a clean topology helps in modeling…

yes, the burne hogarth influence that was cleary seen on the first post, is now replaced more by influence of peter rubino, though i did not change the big proportions… and, yes, the lips are inspired by michelangelo 🙂

anatomical study of the head – 1

despite i have created already a lot of portraits, i still feel my knowledge of anatomy is not good enough… so, tonight i started to study it more closely. i am using burne hogarth, and peter rubino as guide, as they both show anatomical aspects in detail… here is what i have so far, not meant to be someone specific, but only for study…

burne hogarth study – 5 (final)

so, the journey is at its end, it began as a study for anatomy and ended as a marble bust … decided to create an illustration of the finished model as a classical marble bust, to learn more about rendering in zbrush and material creation in zbrush. i hope you enjoyed this study piece, it sure has come a long way…

burne hogarth study – 3

this nights session was quite exciting : i started to grow the backskull to correct the mistake i had found yesterday, but then i realised it was not only the size that wrong, but also the shape,,, i tried to get that right, but then the ears were on wrong position ,,, and that kept going, ,, finally i had the great idea to pick some references of real skulls, and use that to remodel the whole head… and, now i am thinking i am on track… do you agree ?
